Determining Atmospheric Winds using Satellite Observations

Professor Suomi pioneered the idea of using satellite observations of clouds to determine wind direction and speed. This alcove provides a conceptual explanation of how this is accomplished. The alcove first provides a simplified explanation of how a sequence of pictures can be used to determine the speed and direction of an object It also presents some of the difficulties in making this calcuation. The alcove also provides an opportunity for you to derive your own satellite winds.

Here's an applet that allows you to see how different forces influence wind speed and direction.
