About this Course

The analysis of satellite observations is critical in weather and climate studies. The United States and other countries are continually launching new satellites to improve our understanding of weather and climate. Transforming these measurements into information is a current challenge in the geosciences. The course focuses on applications of remote sensing the atmosphere using satellite observations, including cloud detection and the retrieval of atmospheric temperature, and atmospheric moisture and ozone content. The course also teaches the interpretation of imagery collected from weather satellites. At the end of this course you should be able to:

  1. Relate advantages and limitations to satellite systems
  2. Select appropriate non-cloud features using satellite imagery
  3. Select appropriate cloud features using satellite imagery
  4. Relate advantages and limitations to microwave satellite products.
  5. Relate meteorological events to satellite imagery.
  6. Interpret wind flow using satellite imagery.
